Denizens of the Underworld

This is an evolving body of work that began unfolding throughout 2025—a visual meditation on transformation and the quiet power of endurance. Rooted in deeply personal experience, yet intentionally universal, the series explores what it means to descend, to linger in uncertainty, and to emerge changed.

The “Underworld” is not presented here as something dark or punitive, but as a necessary threshold. It is the place we arrive when life strips away certainty—when identity fractures, when comfort dissolves, when we are asked to confront loss, mystery, and emotional complexity. Often what we fear is the very door to our potential. What does not choose us is alignment in action and is a blessing disguised as collapse.

These works are not meant to resolve discomfort, but to accompany it. To meet the viewer where they are.

1: The Eclipse/Gatekeeper

“I am allowed to change.”

“I emerge in my own time.

✨I trust the pause between who I was and who I am becoming.”

“I survive the freeze, and return when the world is ready.”

“I can be brought to my knees—and still realize that am whole.”

“It is through facing my greatest fears, that I will remember and meet Myself.”

Toads—humble, overlooked, and quietly enduring—serve as the central archetype of The Gatekeeper. Neither fully of water nor earth, they embody transition itself. From tadpole to land-dweller, the toad moves fluidly between emotional turbulence and grounded stability, reminding us that transformation is rarely abrupt, and never linear.

At home in shadowed wetlands and unseen places, the toad thrives where others hesitate. It is resilient through cycles of scarcity and abundance, retreat and emergence. In winter, some species freeze solid—heart stilled, breath suspended—only to revive when the thaw returns. Survival, here, is not loud or triumphant. It is patient. It is miraculous.

The toad offers reassurance: stability can follow chaos. Even when overwhelmed by emotion, change remains possible. We often say “I can’t”—sometimes rightly—but just as often from a fixed understanding of who we believe we are. Life has a way of undoing those assumptions. Nearly everyone is eventually surprised by the person they become, the skills they acquire, or the places that come to feel like home.

Let the toad be your guide when the path feels impassable—when an environment, a circumstance, or a relationship has become too heavy to carry. Sometimes the world around us changes. Sometimes we must change ourselves to find a new one. Either way, the toad endures. And so will you.

Eclipses, to many, are a symbol of shifting phases. Here, it is rendered as something more active: a portal.

We break into higher timelines at these threshold moments. You'll cross them knowingly, or by accident. There may be a sense of urgency, an urge to be reckless. If the truth will break it then perhaps it must.

It is the end of one chapter and the irrevocable beginning of another. Entry is rarely gentle. In the underworld, trials arrive quickly. What no longer serves us is stripped away, whether through force or sudden awakening.

The convergence of the Portal and the Toad represents manifestation at the lowest point—the moment of compression before ascent. This is where momentum reverses. Where loss becomes catalyst. Where we rebound from our hardest places and rise again, altered but intact.

Remade.
